Since many cats are selective about what they eat, they are less likely to eat something that is dangerous to their health. Still, there are certain foods that are not safe for cats to consume. Here are some of the most common foods that can be toxic if eaten by a cat.

Chocolate

Cats do not typically eat sweets, but some will eat foods containing chocolate such as cookies, candy, brownies or chocolate baked goods. These types of chocolate-flavored foods can cause chocolate intoxication because they contain caffeine and theobromine, both of which belong to a group of chemicals called methylanthines. Causing overstimulation of the nervous system and the heart, these compounds can kill a cat. The darker the chocolate, the more dangerous to the cat.

Bread Dough

Live yeast found in raw bread dough is hazardous if eaten by cats. The live yeast in the raw dough can multiply within the moist, warm environment of the cat’s stomach and expand into a mass of dough in the cat’s stomach. If the cat eats enough of the raw dough, the mass can expand into a large enough mass to restrict blood flow to the stomach wall and to impede breathing. Additionally, the yeast will metabolize the sugar in the dough and produce alcohol which can be absorbed into the stomach resulting in alcohol poisoning.

Onions and Garlic

If eaten in sufficient quantities, all members of the onion family (onions, garlic, shallots, scallions, etc.) contain certain compounds which can damage a cat’s red blood cells. Garlic is more toxic than onion and cooking will not destroy the toxin. Cats will typically not eat enough raw onion or garlic to poison themselves, but can consume enough dried or dehydrated garlic or onion to develop toxicosis.

Ethanol

Any type of ethyl alcohol ,drinking alcohol, or grain alcohol is very dangerous for cats. Their small size makes them very sensitive to the ethanol in these compounds and drinking even a very small amount can produce intoxication and alcohol poisoning. Cats are attracted to mixed drinks which contain cream, ice cream, or milk and should be kept well away when these types of drinks are served.
Cats are curious creatures and while they may be finicky eaters, they may still find their way to sampling foods which are dangerous to their health. It is recommended that these foods are kept safely secured and when served, that your cats are kept safely away.
